Student research papers: from a real question to a first draft
A research mentor does not hand you a topic poster. They help you narrow a question, pick a method you can finish, and mark a draft like a colleague.
“I want to do research” is not a plan. A plan is a question small enough to answer, a method you can run with the tools you have, and a draft someone can criticize. Actify’s research Activity Mentoring is built around that sequence.

Narrow until it hurts a little
Broad topics feel impressive and stall. Mentors push until the question can fit in one sentence and the data or sources are reachable in your timeline. That narrowing is the real first win.
Method before prose
Students often write introductions before they know what they will measure. We reverse that. What will you count, code, sample, or read? If the method is unclear, beautiful paragraphs will not save the paper.
Drafts get marked, not praised
Feedback looks like margin notes: this claim needs a citation; this figure is unlabeled; this paragraph belongs in limitations. That is how papers improve. Soft praise without edits is a waste of both calendars.
Ethics and honesty
We do not invent data. If a survey fails or a scrape is incomplete, the paper says so. Admissions and contest readers can smell fabricated precision, and so can mentors.
