Volunteer hours that a reader can actually check
Service looks thin when it is a logo and a number. Here is how Actify NGO placements turn hours into work someone can describe.
Parents often ask for “volunteer hours.” Admissions officers ask a quieter question: what did the student actually do, and would the organization still remember them? A round number on a form does not answer that. A supervisor who can describe a campaign, a briefing, or a data clean-up does.
Hours without a job are easy to inflate
If the only record is a screenshot of a sign-in sheet, the activity is already weak. Strong service looks like a role: you owned translation for a weekly update, you ran intake notes, you built a donor one-pager, you logged field data the staff actually used. That is still volunteering. It is just volunteering with a job description.
What an Actify NGO week includes
Placements run online with partner organizations. You get a named officer, a weekly cadence, and a small but real workstream. English is the working language unless the NGO is Korean-facing and asks otherwise. The hours are logged against tasks, not against “participation.”
We keep the scope honest. A high-school student will not set strategy for an international NGO. They can, however, produce materials the staff would otherwise not have time to finish.
Writing about it later
When you describe the experience in an application, skip the mission statement of the organization. Readers already know most NGOs want to help people. Write the part only you can write: the messy spreadsheet, the sentence you rewrote six times so a field team would use it, the meeting where you learned the original idea would not survive contact with the calendar.
Documents, without the theater
You leave with a record of hours, a certificate, and, when the officer can stand behind the work, a letter. We do not write the letter for them. If the placement was light, the letter will be light, and we would rather say that early than dress it up.
When NGO work is the wrong fit
If you mainly want a corporate résumé line, choose a company internship. If you want a competition paper or a pitch, choose Activity Mentoring. Service is not a substitute for either of those, and pretending it is usually produces a thinner application, not a more impressive one.
